March 5th, 2024 by

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s important to recognize the contributions of women who have played vital roles in history. From pioneers to community leaders, these remarkable women have left an indelible mark on history and continue to inspire us with their resilience, leadership, and vision.

Sylvia McLaughlin-

Sylvia McLaughlin was a dedicated environmental advocate whose advocacy spanned several decades, from the 1960s until her passing in 2016. One of her most notable advocacy efforts was co-founding Save The Bay in 1961, alongside Esther Gulick and Kay Kerr. McLaughlin worked tirelessly to preserve and restore the San Francisco Bay, advocating for policies and initiatives to limit bay fill, protect wetlands, and improve water quality. McLaughlin’s advocacy extended beyond Save The Bay, as she was involved in numerous environmental organizations and initiatives aimed at protecting California’s natural resources.

Toshiko Akiyoshi-

Toshiko Akiyoshi changed the face of jazz music over the course of her six-decade career. Akiyoshi was one of few women and Asian musicians in the jazz world, she infused Japanese culture, sounds, and instruments into her music. During her career she worked as a pianist, bandleader, and composer-arranger. Through her sound and composition Akiyoshi cemented her place as one of the most important jazz musicians of the twentieth century.

Anna Baltzer-

Anna Baltzer is a Jewish-American public speaker, author, and activist for Palestinian human rights. After graduating from Columbia University in 2003 she traveled to the middle east where she met Palestinian refugees before deciding to volunteer with the International Women’s Peace Service in the Palestinian Territories. What she witnessed while volunteering inspired her to gather her photographs and journals into a book, Witness in Palestine, to share what she saw with the rest of the world.

As we continue to celebrate International Women’s Day, let us honor the legacy of these extraordinary women who have played integral roles in history. From breaking barriers to advocating for social justice and environmental conservation, their contributions have left an indelible mark and continue to inspire us to strive for a more equitable and sustainable future.
